We need to be supported in order to grow safely. We need to be witnessed with compassion and mindful consideration. When we feel safe, comfortable, and respected, the survival mechanisms encoded in our DNA shut off. No longer in survival mode, the mind is able to enter the space it needs in order to process and integrate new information. When we honor ourselves and our equines by accepting this fact as the basis of our training, we open ourselves up to endless possibilities with our horses or mules.
Tell me about the problem(s) you’re having. Try to be as specific as you can about what your horse or mule does, and how you respond. Most often, "problem" behaviors are the result of physical pain, frustration, or fear, and our ability to address such behaviors lies in our willingness to listen to the horse or mule.
Tell me what goals you have for your horse or mule. Having a clear goal will allow us to focus our efforts, use our time and resources productively, and achieve success.
